The Bitcoin whitepaper proposed a peer-to-peer payment system combining signatures, a public transaction history and proof of work. Its central problem was establishing which spend came first without relying on a trusted central payment processor. The network began operating in 2009.
The distinction that still matters
The protocol can validate whether a spend follows its rules. It cannot establish whether the seller will deliver, the sender understood a message or a custodian has enough assets to honour its customer balances. Those questions remain outside the base consensus mechanism.
Much later crypto marketing borrows the language of removing trust while introducing new issuers, bridges and account operators. A historical understanding makes it easier to ask which intermediary a product removes and which new dependency it adds.
This is the starting point for the Bitcoin network guide and MASTR's distinction between technical and economic control. A public ledger can make financial activity easier to inspect without making the people using it honest.
