Merkle proofs: verify inclusion against a known commitment

A short proof is useful only when its root belongs to the state you intended to trust.

The commitment

Hash-linked structures allow a compact root to commit to a larger dataset. A proof can provide the information needed to verify a particular entry against that root without transmitting every entry. Ethereum uses trie structures for important state commitments.

The root is essential context. A proof against a root supplied by an unknown party establishes consistency with that party's commitment, not that the commitment represents canonical chain state.

Inclusion is a limited claim

Being included in a dataset does not prove every economic statement made about it. A listed wallet balance says nothing by itself about hidden liabilities, beneficial ownership or offchain obligations. A provider can also choose a dataset that omits relevant records.

When reviewing a proof-based claim, identify the dataset, root, date, verification method and source authenticating the root. Then state exactly what was demonstrated. Follow evidence standards and wallet ownership limits before treating a cryptographic proof as a complete audit.
