Binance: exchange accountability · 17 May 2026

Crypto is adapting.

This photo is not just a harmless crypto family moment...

It is almost a perfect symbol of Binance itself.

On the surface, it looks warm, simple and personal: CZ holding his own book, Yi He smiling beside him, two people who built the largest crypto exchange in the world from almost nothing.

But behind that image sits one of the most powerful private financial machines ever created in crypto and finance, a company that grew faster than regulators could understand it, faster than most users could question it, and faster than the industry could admit how much power it had handed to a single exchange.

Yi He is not a background character in the Binance story.

She was there before #Binance, she was there during the explosive 2017 rise, and she is now formally part of the top leadership structure as co CEO beside Richard Teng.

Binance appointed her co CEO in December 2025, after years in which she had already been central to growth, branding, product direction and user strategy.

That matters because Binance was never only about @cz_binance .

The public myth often reduces the whole empire to one man, one logo, one exchange, one token and one cult of personality.

But Yi He represents the other side of that machine: the community instinct, the marketing brain, the user growth engine, the internal power structure and the human layer that turned Binance from another exchange into the default casino, bank, liquidity hub and price discovery venue for large parts of crypto.

And there is this side side, which cannot be airbrushed out by a friendly photo or a signed book.

@Binance pleaded guilty in 2023 and agreed to pay more than $4 billion in penalties over anti money laundering, unlicensed money transmission and sanctions violations. CZ pleaded guilty, stepped down, paid a $50 million fine and later received a 4 month prison sentence.

Yi He was not personally charged in that case.

But it also does not erase the larger question: how did crypto become so dependent on a platform whose corporate structure, regulatory history, listing power, liquidity dominance and founder mythology shaped the market for years?

Why is this image interesting?

It is not just 2 Binance insiders smiling in front of a “Freedom of Money” backdrop.

It is the contradiction of modern crypto in 1 frame. Freedom as branding, centralised power as reality.

Community as language, exchange dominance as infrastructure.

Decentralisation as the slogan, but millions of users still waiting for 1 company, 1 listing decision, 1 withdrawal status, 1 liquidation engine, 1 announcement, 1 founder and 1 leadership circle to decide what happens next.

CZ sold the dream of financial freedom.

Yi He helped scale the machine that made that dream global. Together, they built something historically important, technically impressive and commercially brutal.

But the real question is no longer whether Binance changed crypto. It obviously did.

The real question is whether crypto can survive the level of centralised power it allowed Binance to accumulate while still pretending that the revolution was decentralised.

In my opinion, this fight can no longer be won unless blockchains, and especially users, remember the cypherpunk idea and start taking it seriously again.

Without the seriousness, discipline and hard work of the few remaining cypherpunks, I honestly do not see a way back.

Greed, big names and logos have become more important than intelligence, community and dignity.

Crypto WILL survive and take over as an industry.

But without the cypherpunk spirit, it will not survive as a revolution.
