When an American CEO (here Dario Amodei, Anthropic) is willing to warn the world about the very technology his company is banking on to bring in billions, you start to wonder how close to midnight we really are.
I already feel this is moving faster than we can understand or prepare for, and I’m struggling to see how it ends well.
But I have to question whether I’m recognising a real danger or falling into the familiar trap of fearing something new and calling that good judgement.
My unease alone proves nothing.
I use AI, benefit from it and understand the excitement.
I also understand enough of the technology to see where it could lead and how few technical obstacles may stand between useful automation and systems we struggle to control.
That makes it difficult to dismiss my concerns as fear of the unfamiliar, but it doesn’t make every worst-case scenario inevitable either.
I honestly don’t know where sensible caution ends and unnecessary alarm begins.
But then again.
What worries me is that by the time we have enough evidence to settle this argument, we may no longer be able to undo what we’ve built.
