From a channel design to live software

Lightning Labs released lnd 0.4-beta on 15 March 2018. The release supported Bitcoin mainnet and was aimed at developers, technically experienced users and routing-node operators. Its announcement advised experimenting with small amounts. That contemporary warning is useful context for a technology often retold as having arrived fully finished.

A payment channel lets participants exchange updated claims on funds committed onchain. Routing can connect participants who do not share a direct channel. Opening, closing and disputed settlement still interact with the base chain, while successful forwarding requires usable liquidity along a route.

The release discussed recovery information, automated contract resolution and route finding. Those details show why an application cannot safely reduce channel management to a balance label. A node must handle interrupted operation, changing channel states and exits under the relevant protocol rules.

There is also a difference between operating a channel and using a custodial Lightning service. In the latter case, the provider may control the funds even though payments travel over Lightning. Compare onchain outputs and custody before treating a payment technology as a statement about who holds the keys.
