Participation and agreement

Ethereum's proof-of-stake system uses validators that stake ETH and take part in proposing and attesting to blocks. Protocol rules govern selection, rewards and penalties. Some prohibited behaviours can lead to slashing; ordinary downtime and a slashable violation are different events.

The security model concerns agreement over valid chain history. It does not certify token marketing or guarantee that an application lacks a harmful administrator role.

Ask where concentration sits

Stake distribution, operating infrastructure and software diversity concern different dependencies. Many accounts may rely on a smaller number of service operators. Conversely, counting organisations alone does not identify every validator's effective stake.

Treat decentralisation as a set of measurable questions. Who can propose, attest, upgrade application code or restrict a frontend? Which failures are correlated? A protocol may distribute one decision while an application centralises another. Connect the control analysis with governance before turning a validator count into a safety verdict.
