By the way....Solana came roughly 20 million SOL away from losing finality today...
A routing failure at TeraSwitch knocked 28.83% of all staked SOL offline at once. Once delinquent stake crosses roughly 33.34%, Solana can no longer finalize blocks.
Around 90 validators were affected.
The ugly part is the infrastructure concentration behind it!
TeraSwitch’s AS20326 was hosting about 118.9 million SOL, or 27.34% of total stake. Roughly 94% of that stake disappeared from the network simultaneously after a bad route propagated through its infrastructure.
The failure spread across locations including London, Amsterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt, Singapore and Tokyo. Some validators stayed offline for around 33 minutes.
And the backup story was not exactly reassuring either.
Marinade found that 59 validators representing about 80.2 million SOL came back in roughly the same window, while only 3 of 74 operators it could evaluate appeared to fail over cleanly to backup infrastructure.
Transactions kept finalizing.
But one routing mistake at one infrastructure provider managed to remove almost 29% of stake from the network at the same time.
Read it again.
You can have hundreds of validators and still have a very real concentration problem if half the supposedly independent infrastructure ultimately depends on the same networks, datacenters and routing providers.
That is what nearly bit Solana today.
