Earlier today, Amazon Web Services experienced a major outage that started in its US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia, one of the most important data centers in the world.
The issue began with technical problems affecting databases and storage systems, which quickly caused failures across many AWS services.
Because so many popular apps and platforms rely on #AWS to run, the impact spread fast and affected millions of users around the world.
#Snapchat, #Fortnite, Signal, Perplexity, #Alexa , and even financial services like Coinbase and Robinhood were among those hit by downtime or slow performance.
Amazon engineers said the issue was not caused by a cyberattack but by an internal system failure that created widespread connection errors and delays. AWS reported that most services are now recovering, but some parts of the system are still catching up as backlogs are cleared.
The outage began around midday UTC on October 20, 2025, and for several hours large parts of the internet were effectively broken.
It once again showed how deeply the world depends on Amazon’s cloud infrastructure and how a single point of failure in one region can ripple across the global digital economy.
