Brutal data about Web3 “influencers” and KOLs
Most crypto KOLs are not analysts, builders or investigators.
They do not write code, ship products, trace funds, publish verifiable research or accept responsibility when their followers get destroyed.
They sell attention. Their followers are the inventory, and their credibility is often little more than a fucking follower count wrapped around a paid advertisement.
A major 2026 study by Queen Mary University examined nearly 2,500 finfluencers and surveyed more than 4,200 adults.
Almost 90% of the analysed posts contained more negative than positive quality indicators, including poor sourcing, weak financial credibility, missing risk discussion and undisclosed expertise.
Almost 40% of respondents used social media for financial guidance, while only 9% consulted professionals.
Unqualified lifestyle sellers now command more than 4 times the attention of actual financial advisers.
The crypto-specific numbers are even uglier....
We analysed 35,569 tweets from 180 major crypto influencers covering 1,690 assets.
The shitcoin factory gives these people endless ammunition.
@chainalysis identified 2,063,519 tokens launched in 2024.
It flagged 74,037 as displaying patterns potentially associated with pump-and-dump schemes.
In around 94% of those suspicious liquidity pools, the actor who created the pool also executed the dump.
The average scheme survived just 6.23 days. Create token, manufacture attention, dump on retail, disappear. That is an industrial extraction model.
Regulators are finally documenting the scale of this bullshit.
In April 2026, an FCA-led operation involving 17 regulators requested the removal of 120 finfluencer accounts containing 1,267 illegal financial advertisements.
Those advertisements had reached at least 2,338,372 UK accounts, and 66% came from firms or individuals already on the FCA Warning List.
The platforms were not merely failing to identify new offenders. They continued distributing financial promotions from entities regulators had already flagged.
A previous international operation produced 3 arrests, 6 criminal proceedings, 50 warning alerts and 650 takedown requests.
Some large accounts deserve respect. They ship products, maintain infrastructure, investigate transactions, expose theft and put years of work, money and reputation behind something measurable.
You can inspect what they built.
Most LARPers have none of that. Remove the follower count, engagement circle, private Telegram group, paid campaigns and access to other influencers, and there is fuck-all left.
Many would struggle to build anything in real life without the artificial authority this app handed them.
Do not assume that everyone suddenly “exposing” others is clean either.
Calling someone a scammer is not an audit. Check the accuser’s old promotions, deleted posts, wallets, allocations, undisclosed payments and relationships.
Some people discovered that fake investigation content generates engagement just as efficiently as fake alpha.
