#Bitcoin crashes to 0 on Paradex after technical failure!
A severe technical malfunction on the derivatives exchange Paradex caused the Bitcoin price to briefly display at 0 US dollars, triggering mass liquidations across the platform.
The incident occurred shortly after scheduled maintenance and led to thousands of forced position closures within seconds.
According to a statement published by @paradex on Discord, the issue was quickly identified as a technical error rather than a real market event.
Chief Technology Officer Clement Ho announced a full rollback of the application state to block 1604710 at 04:27:54 UTC, describing it as the last known correct state before maintenance began.
During the disruption, parts of the platform were temporarily inaccessible. Paradex did not disclose how many traders were affected or the total liquidation volume.
The exchange stated only that recovery efforts were ongoing and that all user funds remain safe. Users were also warned to be cautious of fake support channels and potential scam attempts following the incident.
While Paradex is often described as a decentralized exchange, this characterization requires nuance. Paradex operates as a non-custodial perpetuals trading platform built on Starknet, meaning user funds are held onchain.
However, core operational components such as order sequencing, maintenance procedures, and emergency actions like rollbacks are controlled by the Paradex team.
The ability to unilaterally revert state highlights a centralized control layer at the application level, distinguishing Paradex from fully decentralized protocols.
Rollbacks are generally considered a last-resort measure in blockchain systems. Paradex argued that the rollback was necessary to restore platform integrity after the malfunction.
The incident underscores a critical risk in leveraged crypto derivatives trading.
Even on non-custodial platforms, technical failures in infrastructure, pricing logic, or operational control can trigger cascading liquidations, undermine user trust, and cause losses unrelated to actual market conditions.
Whether this event leads to lasting reputational damage for Paradex remains to be seen.
For now, it serves as a reminder that decentralization at the custody level does not eliminate operational or systemic risk, particularly in high leverage environments.
