Wash trading creates the appearance of market activity without the genuine change in beneficial ownership that an ordinary purchase implies. Large volume alone is insufficient to identify it. Arbitrage, market making and rapid turnover can also produce many transactions.
A documented commercial model
The DOJ's October 2024 Operation Token Mirrors announcement described charges against token companies and market-making businesses. It alleged the purchase of artificial trading activity and included activity involving a token created for the investigation. The announcement also distinguished defendants who had pleaded guilty from other charged defendants. It is a historical record, not a current verdict on every named party.
What an investigation needs
Examine counterparties, ownership links, recurring funding, trade direction and whether the activity changes net economic exposure. A circular-looking route can be suggestive while remaining inconclusive if custodians or aggregators obscure ownership.
