A chronology is most useful when the reader knows its cutoff and scope. MASTR’s incident collections cover different periods: the 2025 record, the March 2026 update, January to May 2026, the first half of 2026 and August 2026. Their totals should not be added together. Later lists can overlap earlier ones and use different definitions of theft, fraud, exploit losses or recovered funds.

The individual cases provide context that a total cannot. OneCoin, Terra, exchange closures and the Pump.fun incident involve different mechanisms and different forms of evidence. The publications retain their original dates so that an early report can be read as an early report. The separate Wiki timeline remains available for a broader historical overview.

This section also includes the ideas and culture beneath the market: Shannon’s information theory, the public record of Satoshi Nakamoto and messages people embedded in Bitcoin. Those records help explain why an open network attracted more than speculative trading, and why the distinction between a protocol and the businesses around it matters.
