#Cloudflare is (partially) down again?
What this could mean on a technical level and for web3:
Since around 09:00 UTC users worldwide report outages.
The Dashboard and multiple APIs are failing and many sites return 500 errors.
Active maintenance in Detroit and Chicago increases rerouting, latency and interface failures.
Cloudflare may be experiencing API degradation, control plane instability or routing issues caused by maintenance overlaps, network congestion or misconfigurations.
When the control plane fails, dashboards, authentication flows, DNS updates and security rules can break. Even if the data plane continues to serve traffic, many services become unreliable.
Possible reasons include:
• Routing changes during datacenter maintenance
• BGP instability or propagation delays
• API gateway failure or overloaded edge nodes
• Internal network congestion
• Configuration push errors
• Partial outage in Zero Trust or WAF systems
Even though blockchains remain online, most Web3 services still depend on Web2 infrastructure. When Cloudflare goes down, key access layers fail.
Impacts?
• dApps become unreachable because DNS or HTTPS routing breaks
• RPC endpoints behind Cloudflare show timeouts
• NFT marketplaces and DeFi frontends cannot load
• Wallet connections fail
• Smart contract interactions slow down or drop
• Trading opportunities are missed due to frontend downtime
• IPFS gateways served through Cloudflare show errors
• Users get 500 responses instead of blockchain access
The chain keeps running, but the user cannot reach it.
A single Web2 failure becomes a global bottleneck for Web3.
Today shows again how dependent the ecosystem still is on centralized infrastructure, even while calling itself decentralized.
