A public auction changes the audience

Christie's sold Beeple's Everydays: The First 5000 Days for $69,346,250 in March 2021. The sale brought tokenised digital art into a major auction-house setting and expanded public attention well beyond people already trading crypto assets.

The auction result demonstrates what a particular buyer paid for a particular work under that sale's terms. It is not a general valuation rule for every image with a token attached. Thin markets and a small number of motivated buyers can create eye-catching prices without a deep market for later sellers.

What the token actually records

ERC-721 defines an interface for identifying individual tokens, recording ownership and authorising transfers. Metadata is an optional extension, and the referenced media can live outside the blockchain. Copyright, commercial-use permissions, hosting durability and promised services depend on additional arrangements.

For historical collections, preserve the terms that applied at mint and any later changes. A surviving token can outlive the website or company that gave it practical meaning. Metadata and storage explains that dependency; wash trading explains why a sale history alone cannot demonstrate independent demand.
