SIMD-0538: explaining the Solana proposal discussed on X

For everyone wondering what is happening in the screenshot, because this is important:

Toly is reacting to a new Solana technical proposal called SIMD 0538.

(Correct me if I am wrong @toly)

The proposal is about raising Solana’s block limit to 1B compute units under Alpenglow.

In simple terms, compute units are the amount of work Solana allows inside a block. More compute units means the chain can process more activity per block.

So this is about Solana trying to scale the main chain itself much harder.

-More bandwidth.
-Lower latency.
-Bigger blocks.
-Faster finality.

The deeper point is that #Solana historically pushed back against old crypto narratives (ETH) like sidechains, Layer 2s and enterprise chain deals.

Solana is about to go even further in the opposite direction: make the base layer faster, bigger and more efficient instead of moving activity away from it.

That is why he says the pressure cooker is going to IBRL the chain.

IBRL means:

Increase bandwidth.
Reduce latency.

The quote below basically says: if this proposal is real and gets implemented successfully, Solana wins massively.

But it is still a technical proposal, not something already live.

And it comes with tradeoffs: bigger blocks and more compute can improve performance, but they also increase pressure on validators, infrastructure and decentralization.

But I think this is being worked on.
