The truth is that Big Tech and fake Web3 are starting to look disturbingly similar.
A society that gives a handful of private tech empires control over speech, data, infrastructure and intelligence does not remain free simply because those empires use the word freedom in their marketing.
It becomes free only for as long as the owners allow it.
And that is exactly why crypto was never supposed to be just another casino for shitcoins, influencer pumps and exit liquidity games.
The original idea was much deeper than price candles and market caps. It was about removing the need to trust kings, banks, platforms, governments, payment processors, cloud monopolies and corporate gatekeepers with the basic right to transact, build, speak, store value and exist digitally.
Decentralisation matters because centralised systems always become political sooner or later.
A platform can call itself neutral until the wrong person owns it. A payment network can call itself open until the wrong account gets frozen. A cloud provider can call itself infrastructure until the wrong project gets removed.
An exchange can call itself free market until it controls listings, liquidity, data, liquidations and access. The moment a small group can decide who gets visibility, liquidity, custody, distribution or survival, freedom becomes permission with better branding.
This is also where crypto has betrayed itself.
The space that was supposed to fight centralisation now worships centralised exchanges, billionaire founders, venture cartels, influencer cabals, Telegram callers, market makers, launchpad insiders and fake builders who speak the language of decentralisation while recreating the exact power structures crypto was built to escape.
They sell “community” while controlling supply. They sell “ownership” while dumping on retail. They sell “permissionless finance” while building systems where 5 wallets, 3 insiders and 1 exchange can decide the entire outcome.
Real decentralisation is not a slogan. It is a defence mechanism against captured institutions, captured platforms and captured truth. It means no single company can silence you, no single exchange can destroy price discovery, no single cloud provider can erase your project, no single billionaire can throttle your reach, no single state contractor can turn your entire life into a risk score, and no fake crypto elite can pretend freedom exists while they hold every switch.
The truth is that Big Tech and fake Web3 are starting to look disturbingly similar.
Both sell empowerment while concentrating control. Both talk about users while extracting them. Both praise freedom while building dependency. Both hide power behind interfaces most people do not understand.
Crypto still matters, but only if it remembers why it existed in the first place. Not to make the loudest accounts richer or to create another hierarchy of insiders or not to rebuild Wall Street with worse ethics and anime profile pictures.
It matters because a digital society without decentralised money, decentralised infrastructure, decentralised identity, decentralised communication and decentralised ownership will eventually belong to whoever controls the servers, the algorithms, the rails and the keys.
And once that happens, your freedom is a setting someone else can change.
