US prosecutors described OneCoin as a multibillion-dollar fraud sold through a global network. Co-founder Karl Sebastian Greenwood pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in September 2023. The case concerned deception about the product and the money raised from participants, not merely a token losing market value.

Verify the system behind the presentation

A claimed cryptocurrency should have an identifiable mechanism for issuance, transactions and ownership. Promotional events, educational packages and a growing network of recruits do not establish that the promised system exists or works as represented.

The case also shows why an internal account balance is not independent evidence of asset value. If the operator controls the display, it can create impressive numbers without a corresponding market or redeemable claim.

For a new offer, establish what participants actually buy and how withdrawals or transfers are independently verifiable. Keep recruitment rewards separate from product revenue. See fake investment platforms and the source of returns.
