TRM, ICE and the dispute over a blockchain analytics contract

ANOTHER (SHADY) US ADMINISTRATION DEAL EXPOSED: DHS AND ICE HAND TRM $95M, @chainalysis SUES, AND RIGHTLY SO.. (lobbying..?)

A legal battle is exploding inside crypto.

On July 1, 2026, ICE awarded TRM Labs a 12-month contract worth exactly $94,655,840.

It was not openly competed. "Federal procurement data" (https://t.co/5YUP6ukr2d) lists only 1 offer and reports the full amount as obligated.

The selection process is alarming.

ICE published a market research request on May 28 and closed it on June 2.

Eight companies responded, including 4 small businesses. Within days, ICE decided that only TRM could meet the requirements. The technical criteria and reasons for rejecting the other companies are heavily redacted.

ICE then announced the planned direct award on June 8.

Competitors had roughly 3 days to object and were limited to 1 page in Times New Roman. ICE explicitly stated that this was not a formal request for proposals.

Chainalysis says it responded anyway. ICE confirms rejecting 1 response, but hides both the company’s identity and the reason.

That was the entire process behind a $94.7 million award: 5 days of market research, 3 days to object, 1 page to make the case and only 1 actual offer.

The size of the contract is equally suspicious. TRM’s previous 11 ICE contracts were reportedly worth about $8.59 million combined.

This single award is roughly 11 times larger than all of them put together.

On April 21, TRM policy chief Ari Redbord "promoted TRM Beacon and AI-powered investigative tools" (https://t.co/XMrIYScQDZ) before the House Homeland Security Committee.

Two days later, TRM "hired former government official Edward Currie as its Account Director for DHS" (https://t.co/Lrk7ZtZmHy).

Five weeks later, ICE requested capabilities strikingly similar to those TRM had promoted.

TRM also employs a former HSI cryptocurrency programme leader and spent approximately $110,000 on federal lobbying in 2025, followed by another $66,000 during the first half of 2026.

The registered issues included homeland security and intelligence.

Chainalysis has also received direct ICE contracts and is protecting its own business interests. But none of that excuses an opaque $94.7 million award surrounded by redactions, revolving-door connections and almost no competition.

I think, Chainalysis is right to challenge it.
