Bitcoin’s genesis block: what the record establishes
The first block provides an inspectable starting point. Its timestamp, embedded text and special reward behaviour answer different questions.

Start with the actual record
Bitcoin Core’s chain parameters define the mainnet genesis block and assert its expected hash. The record contains 1 transaction, a timestamp corresponding to 3 January 2009 and an embedded reference to that day’s Times headline about a second bank bailout. Those are inspectable properties of the record, rather than details that depend on remembering a popular retelling. [1]
A timestamp is not an identity document
The embedded newspaper reference gives historical context. It does not prove the author’s legal identity, physical location or every motive attributed to them. A careful account distinguishes the bytes preserved in a block from an interpretation of why those bytes were chosen. The same distinction matters in modern investigations: a public message can be evidence of what was published without proving everything later claimed about its author.
The first reward is a special case
The genesis transaction records a 50 BTC output. Bitcoin Core’s source comments explain that this generation output cannot be spent because it did not originally exist in the database. Do not apply an ordinary later coinbase transaction’s behaviour to this special case. The amount displayed in a historical record and an output’s spendability are separate facts. [1]
Place it in the longer history
The genesis block belongs after the 2008 white paper and before the later growth of wallets, exchanges and applications. It should not collapse those stages into a single “launch” narrative. For an independent check, compare the block fields with a validating node and the relevant client source. Record which network and software version you used.
